Anthropic’s $965 billion flex: the trillion-dollar chatbot gets a blessing in milan

Anthropic is currently trying to do something that feels mathematically impossible: remain the world’s most vocal "safety-first" AI startup while vacuuming up enough cash to buy a small continent. The company just announced a jaw-dropping $65 billion Series H round, pushing its post-money valuation to a mind-numbing $965 billion. For those keeping score at home, that puts them within spitting distance of a trillion dollars—all for a company that started as a group of OpenAI refugees worried about the end of the world.
Looking at this practically, the scale of this funding is hard to grasp. We’re talking about a $47 billion revenue run-rate and a list of investors that reads like the back of a Monopoly box. Sequoia, Dragoneer, and Altimeter are all there, along with "strategic infrastructure partners" like Samsung and SK hynix. They’ve even snagged access to SpaceX’s "Colossus" GPU clusters. It’s no longer just a software play; it’s a total resource war for the future of compute.
But while the money is screaming Silicon Valley excess, the vibe in Europe is a bit more... ecclesiastical. Anthropic just opened its sixth European office in Milan, which sounds like a standard expansion until you realize they’re basically co-branding with the Vatican. The move follows the release of Magnifica Humanitas, the first papal encyclical dedicated to AI. Anthropic co-founder Chris Olah was even invited to speak at its presentation, calling for more voices to shape the "positive outcome" of humanity.
In the spirit of clarity, the Milan team isn’t just there for the prayers. They’re already embedded with Italian giants like Pirelli, Enel, and the Generali Group. One Italian fintech app, Satispay, claims Claude helped them compress an 18-month roadmap into just seven. At Bending Spoons, one of the country's largest tech firms, the majority of code changes are now co-authored by Claude Code. That’s the kind of corporate efficiency that makes CEOs salivate, even if the "responsible AI" conversation remains a bit nebulous.
Given the current landscape, we should prepare for Anthropic to move from being a simple model provider to a literal pillar of global infrastructure. They’ve locked in five gigawatts of capacity from Amazon and another five from Google and Broadcom. That’s enough power to run a medium-sized country, dedicated entirely to making Claude smarter and faster. AWS remains the primary training partner, but with SpaceX now in the mix, Anthropic is hedging its bets across the stars.
I'd say it's very likely we’re seeing the birth of the first truly sovereign AI entity. When you have the Pope’s ear, SpaceX’s hardware, and nearly a trillion dollars in paper wealth, "startup" feels like the wrong word. It’s an empire. The real question is whether all that "safety research" they keep talking about can survive the crushing gravity of this much capital.
It’s a high-stakes gamble on the soul of the machine. Let’s just hope Claude remembers its manners when it's running the world's energy grids and payment systems. If you're going to build a trillion-dollar god, you might as well start by opening an office near the people who have been thinking about the divine for two thousand years.
