God of War Faye, Wolverine’s claws, and the sushi master prequel: PlayStation’s 2026 blitz

Imagine you’re at a mid-tier airport terminal at 3 AM. You’re tired, the Wi-Fi is spotty, and you just paid $14 for a sandwich that’s 40% cardboard.
That’s the vibe of the modern "State of Play"—a mix of high-octane excitement and the creeping realization that you’re being sold a very expensive ecosystem, one peripheral at a time.
Sony’s latest June 2026 update is a masterclass in the "Prequel and Peripheral" strategy. We’re getting more backstories, more haptic feedback, and more reasons to check your savings account.
The Propaganda Simulator: Ace Combat 8
First up is Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve, hitting the PS5 on October 2, 2026.
The premise is delightfully cynical: you play as a pilot taking over the "Rex" callsign after the actual "hero" gets smoked in the first mission. You are essentially a walking PR stunt, a fake legend used to keep morale high in a losing war against the Republic of Sotoa.
It’s basically Top Gun if Maverick was a deepfake.
The gameplay doubles down on the "reality check" rule of haptics. The DualSense triggers now offer resistance for high-G turns, giving you the kind of tactile feedback you’d get from trying to steer a shopping cart with a locked wheel through a crowded grocery store.
You’ll be fighting "Land Battleships"—massive tank-destroyer hybrids that look like a mall food court on treads—and making story choices that determine which of your wingmen actually make it to the credits.
The Prequel Machine: Laufey and Wolverine
Then there’s the big reveal: God of War Laufey.
Santa Monica Studio is finally giving Kratos a break to focus on his wife, Faye. It’s a prequel that promises to explain what she was doing while Kratos was busy brooding in the woods.
It’s a smart move—keep the IP alive without having to figure out how Kratos can possibly kill any more gods without running out of mythologies.
We also got an extended look at Marvel’s Wolverine. It’s visceral, it’s bloody, and it’s exactly what you’d expect from a game about a man with steak knives for knuckles.
Sony also quietly confirmed Until Dawn 2, Control Resonant (launching September 24), and Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis for February 2027.
The Hardware Tax
Of course, you can't play these games on a regular TV like a peasant.
Sony is rolling out the FlexStrike wireless fight stick on August 6, followed by a 27” Gaming Monitor with a built-in DualSense charging hook on August 27.
They’re even dropping Pulse Elevate wireless speakers later this year, because apparently, your neighbors haven't heard enough of Kratos’s grunting yet.
What we’re seeing is the final evolution of the "walled garden." Sony doesn't just want to sell you the game; they want to sell you the chair you sit in, the monitor you stare at, and the speakers that rattle your teeth.
As the industry leans harder into prequels and "enhanced" hardware, one has to wonder: are we actually moving forward, or just buying more expensive ways to look backward?
