Meta’s new strategy: beg the Threads algorithm and turn WhatsApp into a bunker
Meta is currently engaged in a weird game of digital personality split. On one hand, it wants you to treat its Threads algorithm like a magical genie you have to summon with a public post; on the other, it's turning WhatsApp into a digital fortress for people who are tired of being harassed by the internet.
Let’s start with the "Dear Algo" feature on Threads, which is easily one of the most bizarre UI choices we've seen in a while. Instead of just giving users a clean, functional settings menu to toggle their interests, Meta wants you to literally post your desires into the void.
The mechanics are simple but feel slightly performative: you type “Dear Algo” followed by what you want to see more or less of, and the AI supposedly listens for three days. You can even repost someone else’s "Dear Algo" request to inherit their feed preferences, which sounds like a recipe for accidentally adopting a stranger's obsession with niche taxidermy.
It feels less like a feature and more like an engagement hack. Why do my preferences need to be a public post? It’s the digital equivalent of walking into a library and shouting at the librarian that you want to see more books about sourdough, rather than just using the search bar.
While Threads is busy being loud, WhatsApp is trying to get very, very quiet. Meta is rolling out "Strict Account Settings," a lockdown-style feature designed for people who are actual targets of sophisticated cyberattacks—think journalists, activists, or anyone who has pissed off a nation-state.
Once toggled, the app goes into a defensive crouch. It automatically blocks attachments and media from unknown senders and silences calls from anyone not in your contact list. It’s a "safety first" approach that acknowledges the reality of modern spyware and the fact that an "open" phone is often a vulnerable one.
Meta calls this an "extreme protection feature," and they aren’t kidding. It restricts settings that might limit how the app actually works, prioritizing security over convenience. It’s a necessary move in an era where "zero-click" exploits are the new normal, though it’s a bit of a grim reminder that our most private conversations are constantly under siege.
So, here we are. You can now beg an algorithm to show you more podcast clips by posting a public prayer, or you can retreat into a WhatsApp bunker where the outside world can’t even send you a JPEG.
